BEAR
a second stage production

It's the lonely science of ventriloquism versus the creation of a perfectly safe suit in this musical road trip to Pyramid Lake, Nevada.

Please join us for staged reading/open rehearsal of a new work in development by Rebecca Beegle and Jon Watson and get a sneak peek into the earliest stages of a new work as it goes from idea to page to stage. This open workshop reading of BEAR will incorporate audience feedback and refreshments will be provided. Admission is free, but after the show audience members will be invited to "pay what you think it was worth."

This duo’s last collaboration, "hour-minute-second," was the was the February 2003 inaugural production of Rude Mechanicals’ Second Stage series. Rebecca’s play "Don’t Drown" was seen on the Second Stage earlier this year.

* The reading participants, as of this writing, include: Yasmin Kittles (“hour-minute-second,” “Don’t’ Drown”), Jon Watson (“Big Love,” “ART”) and John Botti.

* Launched last season, the Second Stage Series is comprised of new works, works-in-progress and theatrical experiments created and produced by many of Rude Mechs' talented company members. Second Stage performances take place in a casual, late night or top-of-the-week environment and are produced with little to no budget.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

REBECCA BEEGLE (playwright) Rebecca Beegle wrote “hour-minute-second,” the February 2003 inaugural production of Rude Mechanicals’ Second Stage series. In addition to to the recent Second Stage production “Don’t Drown,” her work was featured in “300 Plays About Vladimir Putin,” also on the Rude’s Second Stage this year. Last year Rebecca’s play “Honey” was part of FronteraFest’s Mi Casa Es Su Teatro in Austin, and she won honorable mention in the Austin Chronicle’s 2002 Short Story Contest with her story “Response to the Number Nine.” Her short fiction has also appeared in the electronic magazine 5-Trope. Rebecca holds an MFA in writing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she was a 1999-2001 recipient of the Trustee Fellowship, and a BA in writing from Northwestern University, where she won the Edwin L. Schuman Award for Fiction. She is a CORE member of Austin Script Works.

JON WATSON (additional words and music, actor) is a long time Rude Mechs' company member who is probably best known as one of Austin's favorite actors. His most memorable performances include acclaimed work in many Rude Mechs' productions (BIG LOVE, IN THE HOUSE OF THE MOLES) and at Zachary Scott Theatre (ART, SHAKESPEARE'S R&J, ABUNDANCE). Jon collaborated with Rebecca Beegle as the director of the inaugural Rude Mechs' Second Stage production "hour-minute-second."
